Planning for Laguna Beach Maternity Photos: Sarah and Ben’s Maternity Shoot

Picture this: a cloudy February day at Laguna Beach, two wonderful people, and a sunset that’ll knock your socks off. Yep, I’m talking about Sarah and Ben’s maternity photo shoot. These two are practically pros at this point.  I’ve been lucky enough to photograph their wedding, anniversary, babymoon, and their first family session! There’s something so intimate about capturing beach maternity photos by the ocean, so I was beyond excited that they wanted to shoot here in Laguna!

Sarah and Ben's Journey

Sarah and Ben are more than just clients—they’re friends who have become family! I first met these two lovebirds a few years ago when I had the honor of photographing their wedding. Since then, it’s become a tradition to meet up at Laguna Beach for their photos. From their anniversary/babymoon to their first family session, and soon again this September for more memories. It’s been an incredible journey capturing each one of their milestones!

Working with Sarah and Ben is always a blast. They’re some of the kindest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet. Their love for each other and their growing family is SO apparent, and it shines through in every shot. Plus, they’re total pros at this whole photo thing by now! Watching them interact, laugh, and share sweet moments makes my job an absolute joy and SO easy! Their trust and comfort with me really show in their Laguna Beach maternity photos we captured together.

Planning Your Own Beach Maternity Photos

Inspired by Sarah and Ben's beach maternity photos? Here are some tips to help you plan your own beach maternity session:

1. Timing is Everything

When it comes to beach maternity photos, timing can make all the difference. Aim for the golden hours, just after sunrise or just before sunset. These times offer the best natural lighting, and you might just catch a stunning sunset like we did!

2. What to Wear

Choosing the right outfit is crucial. Here are a few tips:

  • Flowy Dresses: Think light, airy, and flowy. Dresses that catch the breeze look absolutely stunning on the beach!

  • Colors: Soft pastels, neutrals, and earthy tones work best. They complement the natural beachy backdrop and keep the focus on you.

  • Comfort: Make sure you’re comfortable! You’ll want to move around, sit, stand, and maybe even dip your toes in the water.

3. Props and Accessories

Props can add a personal touch to your photos. Consider bringing:

  • Ultrasound Pictures: Your baby’s first photos can be a heartwarming addition to your maternity shoot. It’s a beautiful way to introduce your little one to the world before they even arrive.

  • Blankets: A cozy blanket for sitting on the sand.

  • Hats and Scarves: For a bit of fun and variety in your shots.

  • Flowers: A flower crown or a small bouquet can add a lovely touch.

4. Weather Watch

Keep an eye on the weather forecast. While a little cloud cover can make for soft, diffused lighting, don’t let a rainy day deter you! Some of the most magical beach maternity photos I’ve taken have been in unexpected weather. Rain can create a romantic atmosphere, with droplets catching the light and adding a unique touch to your photos.

5. Embrace the Elements

One of the best parts about beach maternity photos is the natural, candid feel. Don’t stress about the wind or the sand, embrace it! Let your hair down, feel the sand between your toes, and enjoy the moment.

A Little Education on Beach Maternity Photos

For all the moms-to-be out there, here are a few extra tips to ensure your beach maternity photos are everything you’ve dreamed of:

  • Hydrate: Make sure to drink plenty of water, especially if it’s a warm day.

  • Snacks: Pack a few light snacks to keep your energy up.

  • Relax: The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and having fun. Trust your photographer and enjoy the experience!

  • Involve Your Partner: If your partner is comfortable, include them in the shoot. Their presence can add a lot of warmth and intimacy to the photos.

Sarah and Ben’s Laguna Beach maternity photos were a beautiful blend of love, laughter, and a touch of nature’s magic. It’s sessions like these that remind me why I fell in love with photography in the first place. Capturing these moments, the perfect imperfections, and the genuine emotions, it's a true honor.
